14 utility-scale solar photovoltaic (Solar PV) plants totaling 177 MW were put online in the United States in November 2013, according to the latest Energy Infrastructure Update by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
These represent nearly half of the 394 MW of new electricity generation commissioned during the month, all of which came from renewable energy. Over the first 11 months of 2013 the United States put online 222 utility-scale PV and concentrating solar power (CSP) plants totaling 2.63 GW, a 68% increase over the same period in 2012.
Unlike European statistics, this does not include behind-the-meter residential and commercial PV. Federal agencies and grid operators typically either do not count such plants or do not make such information publicly available, leading to a gap in formal statistics.
Also, while the PV capacity added during this time is 20% of all new generation, it is dwarfed by the 6.57 GW of natural gas generation that was built in the United States in the first 11 months of the year. The nation has also built two new coal-fired units at 1.54 GW, as the three largest sources of new generation.
681 MW of utility-scale PV, CSP added in two months
As of November 2013, utility-scale PV and CSP represent 0.61% of the nation's electricity generation. Due to lower capacity factors that many forms of conventional generation, the total contribution to the power supply is lower.
GTM Research (Boston, Massachusetts U.S.) has predicted a sharp increase in U.S. utility-scale solar installations in the fourth quarter of 2013 in its latest U.S Solar Market Insight report. In October and November 2013 alone, the nation installed 681 MW of new utility-scale solar capacity.

A subsidiary of Goldpoly New Energy Holdings Ltd. (Hong Kong) has entered into agreements to acquire majority interests in 195 MW of solar photovoltaic (Solar PV) plants in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. All four plants have either already been commissioned during December 2013 or are expected to be commissioned by the end of the year.
All told, Goldpoly subsidiary United Photovoltaics (Changzhou, China) will pay USD 50 million to Jiangsu Yongneng Photovoltaic Technology Co. Ltd. (Zhangjiagang, China) and Forty-eighth Research Institute of China Electronics Group Corp. (Changsa, China) for its interest in the plants.
Upon completion, United Photovoltaics will hold a 55-90% interest in the plants, and Guodian Inner Mongolia New Energy Investment Ltd. (Huheaote, China) will retain a minority interest of 6-13% in all four. The largest of the four at 65 MW is located in Tumotezuoqi Town, Inner Mongolia; the other three are 40-50 MW in size.
Upon completion of the sale, Guodian Technology & Environment Group Corp. Ltd. (Beijing) will refund a USD 13 million deposit made by Goldpoly.

Unirac, Inc.(Albuquerque, N.M.) has been selected by Renewable Energy Systems Canada Inc. to provide two 10 megawatt (MW) ground mount steel (GMS) racking systems for solar PV projects located in Ontario, Canada.
The PV projects will be executed in two phases, which started in fall of 2013, with final completion scheduled in 2014. The PV projects will provide solar electricity to power the equivalent of 4,000 homes annually.
"RES recognized the need to select a racking provider that understands the construction methodology necessary to accommodate the rocky Canadian soil," said Peter Clibbon, VP of RES Canada.
"Unirac provides an optimized design for ground mounts with fewer foundations, yielding the lowest total installed cost."

The U.K.'s largest bakery chain, Greggs, this week revealed that it has installed 1.28 MW of solar power on the rooftops of 10 of its bakeries as the company looks to lower its carbon footprint.
As one of the most recognizable and popular brands on the British high street (more prominent in the U.K. than McDonalds), Greggs has long had an influence on the dining habits of Britons, with this latest energy saving initiative sure to win the company plenty of plaudits.
Greggs' social responsibility manager Stepehn Waldon said that not only would the company be making important savings on carbon emissions, but would also be eligible to benefit from the U.K.‘s feed-in tariff (FIT).
"As a responsible business, we have a duty to manage our energy consumption by becoming more energy efficient in our bakery and retail operations," said Waldon. "The installation of PV panels on our bakery roofs provided the perfect opportunity to make use of a previously unused space, take advantage of the government’s feed-in tariff scheme, and generate carbon-neutral electricity for use in the bakeries, reducing the amount of fossil fuel we need to buy and consume."
With reputation often as important as performance and product on the cut-throat world of the average British high street, Waldon was keen to stress that Greggs was eager to keep pursuing ever greener sustainability initiatives, targeting a 25% reduction in emissions by 2025.
"Solar PV is one of the most reliable renewable energies on the market, with proven technologies operating across the globe," Waldon added. "Installation makes a visible and public statement of an organization’s sustainable credentials, and provides a very reliable payback in terms of energy savings as well as the guaranteed and index-linked FIT scheme."
Despite the U.K. government set to roll back even further subsidies on solar power in the coming year, solar PV has enjoyed wider prominence in Britain in 2013, with Swedish furniture giants IKEA announcing earlier in the year that it will sell solar panels throughout its 17 U.K. stores
